MAKING A DECISION

YES or NO?

It is better to make coaching a long-term effort because a major change takes time and consistent action and requires dealing with obstacles.

At the same time, coaching also works well as an ad hoc (occasional) experience, that is, when there is a task that really needs to be done for you to achieve your strategic goal. At that, the risks are high, and information seems to be not enough to make a decision.

In this case, one or more sessions can be devoted to preparing for such a decision.

To say “Yes” or “No” to the possibilities that are opening up. To leave or stay in a relationship/job/business. To start a new relationship/business/direction/job/career.

COMING TO A CROSSROADS FORCES A CHOICE. And you realize that even if you fail to choose anything, it’s still a choice, and you’ll have to live with its consequences.

Jack's story

Jack and his partner have been cooperating for more than five years and have built a successful business. However, by the time of the meeting with the coach, the market had evolved, and work conditions and partner relations had changed as well. Increasingly, Jack felt distrust, weariness, and even anger. What used to be calmly accepted (failure to abide by arrangements, being late, etc.) now caused irritation. The partners often exchanged accusations and offensive remarks. There was a feeling that “I am fed up!!”

During the session, we discussed the current situation, the relationship history, and the business: what was good (useful) and bad (useless or harmful) about them. We also talked about what would happen if nothing were done.

As a result of a 30-minute discussion, Jack came to a conclusion or rather reaffirmed for himself the idea that it was necessary to part ways. But how to do it in a “clean” way?

We tried different techniques of “simulating the future” and the most successful (for Jack) turned out to be “being in the shoes of another person.” To do this, we started by compiling the first draft of the dialogue (based on what Jack wanted to achieve as a result of the conversation) and played it out, with Jack alternately playing the roles of himself and his partner Thus, we identified the shortcomings of some arguments, phrases, as well as the overall “tone” of the conversation. Jack ran through the dialogue several times, a behavior strategy was determined, which Jack applied in a real dialogue two days later. Surprisingly, the conversation with the partner was calm, all Jack’s goals were achieved, and the partners parted fully satisfied with themselves.

Thus, during a session with a coach, you can work out not only the solution itself but also the way to implement it.
